Somya Vol of the Month

Our volunteer of the month for November 2016 was Somya Mishra.  As an asylum seeker Somya was keen to gain some work experience in this country. She was a resident in one of our hostels for the homeless and has since successfully moved on into her own accommodation.

Somya has volunteered with us as a Service Support Assistant on our Reception at Head Office, for over a year and has done extra shifts to fill in whenever we need her to.  She has also  helped man our charity stalls at the Positive Images Festival in the City Centre and recently at the Coventry University Volunteer Fair.  Somya is also assisting in recruiting new volunteers for Reception when they come in and shadow her for a day.  She is a very good teacher and has a lot of patience!  She is a real asset to the organisation and we are extremely lucky to have her.

Somya is a hardworking and trustworthy member of the Volunteer Team and to show our appreciation has been awarded with a certificate and voucher – WELL DONE & THANK YOU!

“As a newcomer in this society I was very curious about the social and the work culture in this country and thought volunteering would be a the first step in understanding the norms.  From my first day at Cyrenians I’ve found the staff and fellow volunteers very helpful and supportive which has helped with my growth.

Days here are busy, high on energy and full of humour.  Every day is a new learning day and so it amazes me that till now I’ve never had a single monotonous day.  My experience here has helped me with polishing both my personal and public skills and I believe this has made me more confident, more assertive, in all a better person and I can’t thank Cyrenians enough for that.

Thank you, I love volunteering here”
